del Norte - Day 6 (8-May-2016): Lezama to Bilbao (13.4km)

We started off 8:30am for a 13.4km "jaunt" into Bilbao.  The short walk was a welcome change from previous day's endurance challenges.  We arrived in Bilbao, wandered the old quarter and found the nice Pension Mardones, had lunch, did laundry, relaxed and the strolled around Bilbao, getting our bearings.  Will will spend 4 or 5 days here in June since we fly back to USA from here.

Our Casa Rural in Lazama.

A very windy walk - 20mph winds with gusts to 40mph.  We walked very carefully as the gusts really caught our backpacks.

After 3km of level walking we had a very steep 4km hill.

Typical walking trail.

Tree branches had fallen in places.

View down into old quarter of Bilbao

Lunch spot - great meal.  Mussels in red sauce, shrimp in garlic and olive oil, best patatas frites so far and wonderful crunchy bread.

Street scene - a nice Sunday afternoon with people enjoying the old quarter.

Tapas bars for dinner.  From upper left:  Raw cod with olive oil and spices,  Salmon with shrimp,  Jamon with mushrooms...  We visited 3 bars and then had gelato.
