Day 34 (10/22) - Ponferrada to Pieros (18.1km)

Heavy rain began in the night and it was still raining when we awoke so we had a relaxing breakfast and left around 9am. By then, the rain had stopped and it only rained lightly for a bit in mid-morning. We walked for awhile with a nice couple from New Zealand (she being originally from Columbia) that are on a 10 month long "honeymoon" backpacking trip. We stopped for coffee at Columbrianos and then at a winery cooperative in Camponaraya for a glass of wine and a snack. Too bad we would not buy some wine there. This region is Bierzo and they make wine from "Mencia" grapes and those are not grown much anywhere else. It rained quite hard for nearly an hour and then let up when we arrived at Cacabelos. We stopped by Cuatro Pasos winery (4 Paws) but were hungry so did not taste but did get pointed to a nearby restaurant (Meson Apostol) where we bought a nice bottle of the Cuatro Pasos 2010 Mencia wine, had nice soups (Vegetable for Cindy and Fish for me) and split a nice salad (warm bacon and a medallion of roasted goat cheese over greens) and an order of crepes (wild mushrooms with goat cheese and cream sauce). Then we were back on the trail but decided to stop at a cute little albergue in the next little village. Pieros is more of a "place" than a village but quite pleasant. The albergue is named El Serbal Y La Luna (Albergue de Pieros) and has 18 spots (9 bunks) and offers home cooked vegetarian dinner and breakfast - bed, dinner and breakfast for 15.5 euros or around $20. As I write this there are only 3 other guests.

Nice couple from New Zealand on 10-month "honeymoon" trip.

At this winery, they "poured" our glasses from one of the valves on the wall.

We had wonderful lunch at "Meson Apostol" in Cacabelos. As siesta time began at 2pm the filled up. We had soups and then split a salad and crepes (below).

We are back in wine producing region. This area is Bierzos and most of the grapes are Mencia varietal, not produced in quantity anywhere else.
