Portuguese - Day 2 (5-Oct-2018): Sao Miguel de Arcos to Barcelinhos (20km)

We got a late start ~9pm since the hotel’s (free) breakfast wasn’t until 8:30am.  The morning was clear and sunny and cool at first but warmed up quickly. Fortunately not too hot and there was shade in places.  Not nearly as much cobbled stone tracks or pavement as yesterday but still more than comfortable. We stopped for coffee in San Pedro de Rates and then for lunch in Pedra Ferada.  There were LOTS of bicyclists on the route today -- it’s Friday but we thought October 5th must be a holiday. Turns out it’s “Republic Day” celebrating the overthrow of the monarchy.  We continued on and after 20km reached Barcelinhos. Our target today was just across the river in Barcelos but it seemed that lodging might be better on the Barcelinhos side of the bridge.  We had wanted to stay in a small hotel but it seemed those were full so settled for bunk beds in an albergue (“Alberbue Residencia Senhor de Galo”) in presumably an old house. it was not crowded and adequate - especially for 5 euros per night.  Cindy was a bit put off by the co-ed shower but there were only two other guys and I kept a lookout. After cleaning up we crossed the river into historic center of Barcelos. Had a glass of wine and explored until the restaurants started opening at 7pm and ate at the “Wine Tunnel” restaurant.  Salad, pasta, nice wine from southern Portugal.

Walkers and bicyclists.  Usually noone else in sight but at times quite a few bikers.

Walking on cobbles is very tiring on the feet!

Chickens.  Symbol of Portugal and also of certain "miracles"

Chickens - lots of chickens! This one is in front of the church in Barcelos.
