2014 African Safari - Seattle to Dubai

The first leg of our Africa trip was SEATAC to Dubai (14.5 hrs non-stop) where we will spend three nights to recover from jet lag and see a new country. Emirates airline assists in getting hotels and we took advantage of their "stopover on arrival" package which requires you to wait until arrival to get assigned lodging. We ended up in a fairly nice place nearby the airport and walking distance from a metro station.

Dubai is pretty amazing and we will need to study more about their economy, history, etc. We spent two full days sightseeing with the first day in the older sections of Dubai, nearby the "creek" and the second day, in more modern sections further away. We saw a lot of skyscrapers and new buildings and wonder how the economy sustains all the growth. Unlike most places we have visited, the fanciest hotels do not allow non-guests on their properties so we only looked from the streets. We ended the day at the Dubai Mall, largest mall in the world and next to tallest skyscraper in the world. It was quite crowded since today is Friday so most people have the day off. Needless to say, the people watching was interesting.
