We were up fairly early as the sleeping accomodations (i.e. completely full dormitory) was a bit less than ideal. Quite a few pilgrims were up and about before sunrise. We had breakfast at the little market/deli across the street and were walking by 8am. Again, the weather was clear and cool so walking was nice. Most of the day was on narrow lanes, some with cobbles and a few on stones - much of it was on the Roman road (“route XIX” from Braga to Lugo) and we crossed a few small bridges from the era. We had coffee and pastries mid morning and stopped for ~11am lunch at an albergue - enjoying tuna salads and beer. After noon it was a bit warm but not too hot. We reached Valenca where we had stayed in 2016. Valenca is on the Minho river that marks the border between Portugal and Spain. We crossed the river on a historic bridge with views back to the Portuguese fortress as well as forward to the historic areas of Tui. We decided to splurge on a nice hotel in the historic area, not far from the Cathedral. After settling in we had a glass of wine in the hotel’s garden then walked into the historic center of town near the cathedral. After touring the cathedral we had tapas (nice wine and pimientos de padron) and then a three course dinner for $15 each. My entre was pork knuckle! Yummy.
Pork knuckle for dinner!
